DiGi invest in EDGE from Siemens
May 31, 2003
Malaysia's DiGi Telecommunications has signed an agreement with Siemens
Malaysia to upgrade its current GSM/GPRS mobile network to next generation
wireless technology using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).
This marks another breakthrough for the telco, which has already established
a reputation for spearheading innovation. The company's initial focus
will be on ensuring that its Klang Valley network is upgraded to EDGE
technology. This will make DiGi the first network operator in Malaysia,
and one of the first in the Asia Pacific region as well, to make EDGE
commercially available.
"The significance of this signing is that over time, it will enable
DiGi to deliver higher quality voice calls, more capacity, and broader
bandwidth which enables faster rates of data transfer than are currently
available in Malaysia," said Mr. Tore Johnsen, Chief Operating Officer,
DiGi Telecommunications.
One of the most attractive features of EDGE is that it allows a smooth
evolution and upgrade of existing network hardware and software. DiGi
has already invested in its packet switched GPRS network which is a pre-requisite
for maximum utilization of EDGE technology.
"We began this process more than a year ago when we launched GPRS
on our network. This was in preparation for the next step - the introduction
of EDGE, which enables 3G type services to be delivered over our current
2.5G network by tripling the rate of data transfer," explained Mr.
Johnsen.
"The technology itself is state-of-the art, but what is most exciting
is that it allows customers to stay connected and have access to information
and entertainment with greater mobility, speed, convenience and clarity.
Mobile data has been with us for the past few years. The driver has been
SMS, and its rather unexpected success due almost completely to user demand.
In the near future, there will be a significant expansion of messaging
from mobile email to MMS with its ability to send messages from handset
to handset along with still pictures, video clips and audio content,"
he added.
"Siemens Mobile's end-to-end product portfolio and integration capability
will enhance the end users' mobile experience through EDGE," said
Mr. Rainer Althoff, President and CEO of Siemens Malaysia.
