SK Telecom Selects Two Equipment Providers for WCDMA Service

SK Telecom announced that it has selected Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics as the two equipment providers to launch the company’s WCDMA service, a third-generation (3G) mobile wireless technology.

According to SK Telecom, it made an initial decision this past January to select the two domestic equipment makers over the foreign bidder Nortel. SK Telecom said the final decision was based on various factors, including service, procurement conditions, and technological competitiveness, in particular LG’s dual band dual mode (DBDM) technology.

SK Telecom expects to offer the service in Seoul at the end of this year and said that Samsung will provide the initial equipment for these installations. As for LG, the service location will be determined soon.

SK Telecom said that Nortel is not completely out of the picture and that it plans to utilize Nortel’s technologies and services in the future.
