Hutchison fixing 3G switching problem in Hong Kong

May 7, 2004

Hutchison's problem of drop calls on its 3G mobile network in Hong Kong is gradually being resolved, the HK Standard reported. Deputy managing director Cliff Woo said the majority of the switching problem came from NEC handsets while the Motorola's had fewer problems.

Woo indicated that drop calls were much to be with NEC's handset rather then Hutchison's network. The operator has been active in upgrading the software on the handsets which has lead to fewer drop calls. It has also meant batteries lasting 40% longer.

Woo said the network covers 99% of the local population. The operator will be extending its 3G cover to the region's metro system MTR, which so far has limited coverage on concourses.

"We expect to upgrade our existing 2G radio system along the MTR line by mid-2005. In the fourth quarter this year, some of the MTR tunnels will be covered," Woo said.
