Swedish operators fail 3G conditions

May 17, 2004

Sweden's telecom regulator Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) said Monday telecom operators Hi3G, Svenska UMTS Licens AB, Vodafone and Orange had not fulfilled rollout conditions as required of their 3G licences.

The operators were required to provide nation-wide 3G coverage by the end of last year but had in fact only fulfilled 65-75% of the promised network development.

PTS had set the new deadline of 1 December 2004 for operators to satisfy network requirements or they risk being faced with penalties.

The regulator had in the past relaxed rollout conditions imposed on 3G networks during the global economic downturn and uncertainty over the new technology. PTS feels they have treated the operators equal and feels the amendment is reasonable.
