Swisscom Mobile deploys Tellabs Ethernet solutions

May 18, 2004

Swisscom Mobile has chosen the Tellabs 6300 managed transport system to build an integrated access network architecture with high capacity for 2G and 3G traffic. Swisscom Mobile customers will benefit from enhanced services, such as faster and more secure connections as well as more efficient voice and picture messaging.

Tellabs equipment has been part of the Swiss operator's network since 1996, and under the new agreement between Tellabs' Swiss partner Miracom AG and Swisscom Mobile, the operator has purchased the Tellabs 6350 switch node and Tellabs 6320 edge node from the Tellabs 6300 series. Both products integrate with Swisscom Mobile's existing Tellabs 8100 managed access system, enabling the operator to continue to manage the network effectively under a single network management system. The Tellabs 8100 network manager provides centralized end-to-end integrated network management of both the Tellabs 6300 and Tellabs 8100 product families, enabling customers to lower operational costs, provision services faster, restore services automatically and increase network availability.

Swisscom Mobile now has the ability to implement new Ethernet over Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) connectivity across its networks. "As we have evolved our network to meet our customers' needs, Tellabs has been able to offer new solutions to meet our changing requirements," explained Kurt Schmid, head of network strategy, Swisscom Mobile. "We needed additional high- order capacity in our access network to expand our service offerings to our mobile customers. With the Tellabs 6350 switch node we will now be able to offer various 2G and 3G services through the increased capacity."

The Tellabs 6300 system will help Swisscom Mobile maximise use of network resources, reduce operating expenses and add new customers easily, quickly and accurately. With the Tellabs 6350 node, the world's most dense digital cross- connect, Swisscom Mobile can expand its services by providing additional high- order capacity in its network. The Tellabs 6320 edge node has the benefit of being a compact and scalable product used by Swisscom Mobile to upgrade capacity in the access and regional part of the network.

"By choosing Tellabs products once again, Swisscom Mobile confirms Tellabs' position as a leading provider of future-orientated mobile transport network solutions," said Bill Burns, senior vice president, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Tellabs. "With a more effective and scalable network architecture, Swisscom Mobile can handle traffic more efficiently, which will have a positive effect on operational expenditures and revenue growth."

The Tellabs 6300 system is a 3G SDH solution that delivers profitable data and voice services. It provides Ethernet services and transport with high bandwidth granularity and quality of service over SDH networks, enabling operators to deliver multiple services from a cost- effective high-density platform with a more efficient use of bandwidth and greater scalability. Together with the Tellabs 8100 managed access system it is part of Tellabs' data solutions portfolio, which also includes the Tellabs 8800 series of intelligent multi-service routers and the Tellabs 8600 managed edge system.
