Spain Launches 3G

May 25, 2004

3G sales wars appear to be breaking out across Europe. No sooner had the Spanish operator Telefónica Móviles, announced the launch of its UMTS service than Vodafone rushed to counter with its own announcement that 3G was now ready to go in Spain. Meanwhile, in Italy, Telecom Italia Mobile stole a march on its rivals by kick-starting its 3G marketing campaign a day ahead of Vodafone.

Telefónica said that it plans to invest up to one billion euros in its new 3G service. Its móvil "Oficin@ MoviStar UMTS/GPRS offering is currently available to all customers, while its videoservice via mobile is being trialled, for free, by 500 large enterprise users. The Spanish operator announced that 3G handsets will be on general sale from retailers across Madrid, Barcelona and other major cities. The first terminals to go on sale in Spain will be the Sony Ericsson Z1010 and the Motorola A835. Each handset will cost the consumer around 499 euros. Vodafone in Spain is expected to announce the launch of its 3G services there today.

In Italy, Marco De Benedetti, the CEO of the giant Telecom Italia Mobile, reported that his company had received orders from retailers for more than 450,000 3G handsets. This figure, he gleefully pointed out is higher than the total number of sales H3G has managed in Italy, since it launched its services back in 2003. However, TIM later admitted that the figure was for orders from dealers and also included some EDGE phones.

H3G countered that its sales are now far higher than the 453,000 it announced two months ago. Vodafone is expected to announce a launch date for its 3G services in Italy later today.
