Samsung Electronics announced on May 27 that it will export its dual-mode device, "world phone (SCH-W109)" to China Unicom, following Verizon Wireless of the U.S. The mobile phone maker said that the handset would enable roaming between GSM and CDMA anywhere in China
The "world phone" can work both on the cdma2000 1x(800MHz) and GSM (900/1800MHz) networks so that users can roam between the two wherever they go around the world without extra cell phones or number changes.
The model that will make its ambitious debut in the Chinese market is a folder model with VGA camera, flash and 2.2 inch-wide and 260,000 color in/external TFT-LCD screens. It also provides 64 polyphony ring tone and speaker-independent voice recognition.
An official of Samsung Electronics said," The export of "world phone" to China following the U.S. is only a prelude to the "age of world phone." He went saying, "As we expect millions of annual demand for our dual band model, we will go ahead to allure customers in other Asian nations including India and Latin America where both CDMA and GSM networks are used as well as European countries which mainly adopt GSM.
Samsung also unveiled its plan by saying, "A new model that provides GPRS for world phone model will be introduced within this year and "upgraded world phone" that supports cdma200 1x EV-DO/GSM/GPRS will hit the market next year."
