Another company denounces Belgian market

date: 14 November 2000, source: UMTS

It seems that operator Deutsche Telekom will probably not enter the Belgian auction for one of four licenses. The reason it gave was that the market is quite small and dominated by Belgacom.

Deutsche Telekom is the third operator to voice negative opinions about entering the Belgian market. Telenet and WorldCom have both said they will not enter, due to the predicted unprofitability of the market. However, Mobistar and Proximus, two of the biggest Belgian operators, have both announced that they plan to bid.

Deutsche Telekom won a Austrian license last week and has gained licenses in the Netherlands, the U.K. and Germany. It does not appear that the decision to leave Belgium is a sign of weakness in the company's strategy, but rather a shrewd, financially motivated decision.
