Portugal to start beauty contest decision

date: 18 November 2000, source: www.siemens.com

Portugal is to start judging the 3G license proposals this week, Portuguese newspaper Diario Economico has said. The market regulator will evaluate each proposal individually and a copy of the judgement will be sent to each of the bidders. There will then be a 10 day review period to allow bidders to make any complaints or comments.

It was originally expected that the decision process for the four licenses would not start until early December. The licenses will be allocated via a beauty contest, where the fixed fee per license will be EUR100m. The decision was not expected until the end of December, it is thought the decision will be brought forward as well.

The bidders in the running are: Jazztel, Sonera, Telecel Comunicacoes Pessoais*, Vivendi, TMN* and Optimus*. (* = current GSM operators)
