Govt seeks feedback on drafting 3G policydate: 29 November 2000, source: www.thestar.com KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has yet to take a stand on the issuance of licences for International Mobile Telecommunications 2000, more popularly known as 3G services. Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Amar Leo Moggie urged the public and industry players to come forward with their views and suggestions "on the best possible option'' for the Government to consider when formulating its policy on 3G services. "The joint committee comprising officers from the ministry and the Communications and Multimedia Commission has prepared a discussion paper on the proposed implementation of 3G,'' he said. The paper can be viewed at the commission's website at (http://www.cmc.gov.my/). Moggie said the Government was not discussing about how many licences would be awarded but "the best approach for the 3G spectrum to be assigned that will benefit the industry, the people and the nation.'' The 3G services will provide access, by means of one or more radio links, to a wide range of telecommunication services supported by fixed networks and to other services which are specific to mobile users. Telekom Malaysia, Celcom, Maxis, Time dotCom and DiGi are among the local companies vying for a stake in 3G services. |
