Nokia and Vodafone predicts mass take-up of 3G phones in 2003date: November 14, 2001 Nokia said on Wednesday it was on track to deliver advanced 3G mobile phones in Europe in the third quarter of calendar 2002. At a joint news conference held in Tokyo with Japan's top mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo, Nokia Chairman and Chief Executive Jorma Ollila said the company was on track to deliver 3G phones in Europe next year, and that mass production would begin in early 2003. Asked if Nokia was prepared to deliver a 3G phone in Japan, where DoCoMo launched the world's first 3G service last month, Ollila said: ``We will have to discuss this with NTT DoCoMo, but technologically we are ready to launch in the third quarter.'' Nokia, already the top supplier of mobile phones worldwide, is considered the only non-Japanese manufacturer that will be able to deliver a 3G phone without an alliance. A shortage of 3G mobile handsets could delay widespread availability for consumers until mid-2003, according to Vodafone, the world's largest mobile operator. Sir Christopher Gent, chief executive, encouraged the UK government to consider a extension of the 20-year licences, which were auctioned for a total of $32.85billion in March 2000. Sir Christopher remained upbeat about the longer-term potential of the wireless internet services offered by 3G and an intermediary technology known as GPRS.
