CDMA event underscores market sucess for current and next-generation wireless services

Key industry figures convened during the 2001 CDMA Americas Congress, held recently at the San Diego Convention Center, to discuss the market successes and opportunities related to deploying current and next-generation CDMA wireless services and applications. Highlights of the event included the celebration of the one-year anniversary of CDMA2000 commercial availability; a keynote address by high-tech futurist George Gilder, chairman of the Gilder Group and Qualcomm'S state of the industry address. The Congress was organized by the CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) and the Institute for International Research (IIR) (www.iirusa.com).

"This year's event was a great success, bringing people from the Americas and all over the world together to discuss the latest developments in CDMA technology," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "The CDG congratulates the industry on another year of innovation complete with the introduction of 3G services, international roaming collaboration across all technologies, and the advancement of wireless applications. We look forward to the year ahead and to the continued roll out of 3G services."

With more than 1,200 delegates, the opening session, which was broadcasted live over the Internet by webcast production company, Digevent, featured Gilder's keynote; state of the industry address from Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Irwin Jacobs of Qualcomm; and an executive panel debate on key issues shaping the future of wireless communications around the globe. Moderated by the CDG, panelists included representatives from the CTIA, FCC, Leap and Qualcomm.

The one year anniversary of CDMA2000 commercial availability was also celebrated at the Americas Congress. Korea's SK Telecom and LG Telecom launched their 3G services last October, and KT Freetel followed with CDMA2000 commercial deployment this Spring. In the Americas, Verizon Wireless, Western Wireless and Bell Mobility also have recently rolled out 3G services with CDMA2000. A growing number of operators around the world have announced plans to launch 3G CDMA2000 networks in the next several months.

In addition to the more than 50 sponsors and exhibitors who showcased the latest developments in CDMA technology, this year's Congress featured pre-conference workshops, such as one for wireless applications developers, and the annual CDMA Test Forum. The CDG also awarded three scholarships to University of California, San Diego Extension students pursuing careers in the wireless field.
