Austrian operators may demand refundsdate: November 16, 2001 - source: Siemens UMTS NewsDesk Austrian mobile operators are to withstand restrictions being placed on transmission installations preventing them from quickly deploying their next generation networks. 3G Bulletin has been informed that operators are becoming critical of what they see as an uncertain climate, particularly as a result of restrictions occurring in the municipality of Salzburg. Recently, Johann Padutsch, Salzburg environmental councillor has been blocking concessions for masts as a result of what he dubs 'electrosmog'. This in turn has led operators to threaten to demand a repayment of their license fees. Certainly, Austrian operator Max.mobil has not ruled out demanding repayments in an extreme case, arguing that in the current climate it is impossible for them to create a 3G network, and that operators are therefore demanding legal security and binding norms for transmitters. Max.mobil's comments have been echoed by Boris Nemsic, head of A1, who says his company may also demand a full repayment. Six 3G licenses were sold on November 3rd 2000 to max.mobil, Mobilkom Austria, Connect Austria, Mannesmann 3G (tele.ring), 3G Mobile (Telefonica) and Hutchison 3G for a total of $618million.
