Siemens denies catastrophedate: November 19, 2001 Siemens AG, the German electronics giant, yesterday denied rumours of a UMTS catastrophe. A spokesman announced that management was still holding negotiations with telephone operators such as German company Deutsche Telekom AG, Europe's biggest telecommunications group, and Vodafone Group PLC, the world's biggest mobile telecommunications specialist on 3G deployments around Europe. A German newsweekly had reported that Vodafone had decided to co-operate mainly with mobile telephone manufacturers Nokia, Motorola Inc and Panasonic. The spokesman also denied that his group was incapable of manufacturing enough mobile phones for the introduction of Europe's UMTS generation in 2002. Siemens IC Mobile previously performed successful trials on 3rd generation mobile radio with a total of twelve European mobile radio carriers. Voice calls have been conducted over UMTS test networks or connections set up from the UMTS networks to existing GSM and fixed networks in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Norway, and Spain. Near-serial 3G mobile phones were employed for the tests. Alongside voice, on the Isle of Man live images have also been sent from terminal to terminal and mobile Internet access set up via UMTS. All carriers used the UMTS network technology of the collaborative partners Siemens IC Mobile and NEC Corporation.
