Sony Ericsson can take on Nokia

date: November 20, 2001

Jan Wareby, the executive vice president of Sony Ericsson joint venture said at a telecoms conference that it can talk on Nokia in the next generation game.

Wareby reiterated the joint venture's goal of becoming the leader in multimedia communication devices in five years, saying the mix of Sony's expertise in consumer focus design and distribution and Ericsson's leading telecoms technology would help it take on Nokia, which now has some 33 percent of the mobile phone market.

He also reiterated that the joint venture would be profitable next year and that it would launch its first 3G mobile phone, offering video on the handset, for the Japanese market in the first half of 2002 and the first 3G phone for Europe in the second half of the year.

Telecom experts believe the first 3G handsets branded with the Sony Ericsson logo would hit the market in late 2002.

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, the joint venture between Ericsson and Sony Corporation, was started on October 2001 and the company is aiming to become the number one player in mobile multimedia products within 5 years.
