NTT DoCoMo to Launch Location Information Service Based on Own Platform

date: November 20, 2001

NTT DoCoMo announced today that it will launch a nationwide position-information service based on the DoCoMo Location Platform, dubbed the "DLP service," on November 27, 200 that can be use on FOMA 3G services.

The service uses information from global positioning satellites (GPS) to identify, register and communicate geographic position. Through Application service providers (ASPs) and other companies, users can access related services, such as:

- confirming one's current location to, for example, obtain information about the area
- informing others of one's position
- registering positions on a server database
- confirming the location of a third party, such as teachers checking the whereabouts of students on a school outing.

DoCoMo will also provide special functions that enable ASPs and other companies to manage positioning information for specific groups and geographic areas, as well as provide this information via e-mail to registered addresses.

NTT DoCoMo today notified the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affair, Posts and Telecommunications of its plan to launch this General Type II telecommunications business.

The DLP service will be managed by Location Agent, Inc., an affiliate company established on July 28, 2000.
