South Korean Gov offers more bandsdate: November 21, 2001 South Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication has announced plans to allocate frequency bands for 3G mobile phone services to three more operators this month, completing the process. A ministry official said the allotment of the frequency bands to Korea Telecom, SK Telecom and LG Telecom has been delayed due to a failure to reach an agreement on the B frequency band for the services between SK and LG. SK and LG are contending for the B band and have yet to arrive at an agreement on which company will have the band. The ministry may find itself forced to make a decision at its own discretion if the telecom carriers fail to conclude an agreement, the official said. LG, which will launch a 3G service based on cdmad2000, a competing technology developed by U.S. Qualcomm, is demanding that the ministry keep its promise to give the B band to a cdma2000 operator. In response to this, SK said that it should get the B band for conducting roaming services with Japan's NTT DoCoMo.
