SK Telecom officially confirms it launches the world's first 1x EV-DO Servicedate: November 21, 2001 SK Telecom began offering its customers the world's first trial service of new generation wireless mobile phones, based on the CDMA2000 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) standard. For the time being the testing-level service will be available in limited metropolitan areas of Seoul, Kwachon and Anyang. A full-fledged commercial version is set to be deployed in Seoul and Kyunggi before it expands into 26 cities across the nation beginning in April 2002. To that end, SK Telecom completed last month the equipment performance tests manufactured by Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Kondela. SK Telecom will also cooperate with handset manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Teletech, and GTRAN to develop handsets with the PCMCIA-based terminal for VOD. PCMCIA is a type of terminal used exclusively for wireless data, utilizing a wireless card that is inserted in a notebook computer or PDA. As early as next month, SK Telecom plans to launch a data-oriented cellular phone service through a PCMCIA terminal manufactured by GTRAN. SKT said its 3G EV-DO service will shorten the MP3 file downloading time from 4-5 minutes to less than 10 seconds. Under ideal conditions, the advanced transmission speed will lead to more than 10 frames of an image, a high level of quality that qualifies as smooth video streaming. SK Telecom is hoping that the new wireless phones will become the portable wireless computers of the future, specializing in the mobile Internet, corporate data transmissions and electronic commerce. "The trial launch comes six to 12 months ahead of foreign competitors, which are scheduled to unveil their CDMA2000 1x EV-DO services between late 2002 and early 2003," said vice president Il-joong Kim.
