Generic Media and PacketVideo launched video distribution servicedate: November 22, 2001 Generic Media and PacketVideo, both based in the United States, said they have developed a live-video distribution system for NTT DoCoMo's i-motion 3G mobile communications service. Both launched the service over DoCoMo's FOMA 3G mobile network on November 19, 2001. The service, dubbed "i-motion" will enable users to obtain video content at speeds of up to 384 kbps (64 kbps uplinks) from sites accessed via DoCoMo's official i-mode portal with i-motion-compatible FOMA handsets. Generic Media develops video content delivery technology, and PacketVideo develops video distribution systems for cellular phones. In September 2001, NTT DoCoMo established the "FOMA Live Streaming Delivery Trial Consortium" to experiment with video delivery to a variety of FOMA-compliant handsets. As part of the activity of this consortium, NTT DoCoMo is planning to use and certify the video distribution system developed by the two companies and Generic Media's real-time motion image format conversion service on the Web called Generic Media Publishing Service (GMPS), which was released in February 2001.
