Belgium Battle for Building Permissiondate: November 22, 2001 - source: BWCS Belgium’s three mobile operators: Proximus, KPN Orange and Mobistar have launched a court action against the Belgian government in an attempt to extend their networks. According to reports in the Belgian press, the trio have over 1,000 applications for permission to build radio masts are pending at the regional level. The mobile companies want the government to intervene. All three operators won 3G licences in the country’s UMTS auction earlier this year, but they claim it is currently impossible to meet existing demand while so many building permits are being held up. The companies want the Belgian administration to provide clear guidance to the regional authorities or, the companies claim, they will demand compensation through the courts for the financial losses they are incurring as a result of “neglicence” in the delivery of the permits.
