Slovenian Gov awards one licensedate: November 25, 2001 The Slovenian government said it had managed to sell just one UMTS licence to mobile phone operator Mobitel, the sole bidder in the country's auction of three next generation mobile telecoms licences. Mobitel, a wholly owned subsidiary of Slovenia's state-owned Telekom, will pay 22 billion tolars (EUR 101.4 million) in the deal. The Ministry of Information Technology revealed Slovenia hoped to avoid this situation by offering the licences again within the next 18 months but declined to comment on whether the asking price would be dropped. Back in August, Simobil, Slovenia's second mobile operator, has revealed that it would not participate in the country's forthcoming auction due to the high starting price for the license. Despite the high cost of the licenses, especially considering the relatively small population of under 2 million, the fee has already been lowered to SIT22bn (EUR102.5m) due to the failure to sell 3G licenses earlier this year in April because the fee had been too exorbitant SIT27bn (EUR125m). Other changes that have been made in the license procedure include, a single license being awarded if just one bidder steps forward. In April, the Slovenian tender failed to attract sufficient interest to be allowed to carry on. There were three licenses available, but the Ministry of Information Technology revealed that there was just one application received from the state owned carrier, Mobitel.
