Bouygues Still Uncertain About 3G Biddate: November 25, 2001 - BWCS Bouygues Telecom, France’s third largest mobile operator, has still not decided on whether or not to make a bid for one of the government’s remaining two 3G mobile licences. The company, which pulled out of the original auction earlier this year to leave just two companies bidding for four concessions, says it is looking at the possibility of presenting a business case for a bid. Jean-Michel Hubert, Chairman of the French telecoms regulator ART revealed earlier this week that the sale of the two remaining licences will probably begin next January. Since the first auction, which saw France Telecom and its main domestic mobile rival SFR walk away with licences, the government has agreed to drastically reduce the price of its 3G concessions and has lengthened their duration from 15 to 20 years. The improved terms may well see several international players vying for one of the two concessions, with companies such as Deutsche Telekom, NTT and Telefonica all rumoured to be showing an interest.
