Interxion and 3G Mobile launch joint outsourcing project

date: November 25, 2001

Interxion announced that the Spanish mobile provider Telefónica Móviles, which obtained a UMTS Licence in Austria through its daughter company 3G Mobile Telecommunications GmbH, has selected the internet infrastructure services of Interxion Austria instead of building its own data center. Telefónica will be locating its complete network operation centre (NOC) as well as the technical team of 3G Mobile at Interxion Austria. It is the first time that Spanish company Telefónica has outsourced core competencies on such a large scale.

Kurt Lüscher, former chairman of UTA (owned by Swisscom, the largest alternative Austrian Telco compared to the incumbent) and Managing Director of 3G Mobile Telecommunications since June, has chosen to focus on quick and reliable solutions for future mobile customers without having to worry about the underlying technical details. "Our customers are extremely important and we want to concentrate on their needs. This is why we decided to partner with Interxion - the partnership enables us to deliver our service faster than other providers. Interxion's quality of service and cost efficiency has convinced us that this is the right step to take.

"This important decision by Telefónica to outsource its data center to us implies real confidence in the quality of our service, the capability of our staff and the solid financial situation of Interxion", said Harald Helnwein, Managing Director of Interxion Austria.

The Interxion Community, consisting of large national and international carriers, telecom companies, ISPs, ASPs, content providers, media companies and mobile services providers, played an important part in the decision. Helnwein said: "The integration of telecom and internet will become even more important because of GPRS and UMTS. Therefore, mobile service providers are searching for partners to provide intelligent solutions and content. In addition, solution providers require access to different possibilities. These parties come together at Interxion and can start a meaningful B2B-relationship. Interxion is the market place for reliable and intelligent network and internet solutions."
