New jack can make handset smallerdate: November 26, 2001 Japan's SMK Corp. has begun marketing a low-profile six-pole (6P) jack for size-sensitive 3G mobile phones and personal digital assistants. The jack is 3.6 mm high and has a diameter of 2.5 mm. "Folding-type mobile phones have become popular, but they are still bulky, and that is mainly because of jacks," said an SMK spokesman. NTT Docomo in October began offering 3G telephony, data, video and music services. Competing carriers are expected to offer those services next spring and will be using SMK's jack for smaller design 3G handests. The SMK spokesman said 3G services necessitate a stereo earphone with a microphone and remote control unit. When plugged into a cell phone jack, the earphone provides hands-free operation. The six poles in SMK's jack are used for telephony, right and left sound, microphone, ground and interchangeability with existing three-pole or four-pole plugs.
