Telekom Austria Group: VIP-Net Announced First 3G Phone Call in Croatiadate: November 26, 2001 The Croatian Mobile Provider, VIP-Net (66% owned by Telekom Austria's mobile subsidiary Mobilkom Austria) and Ericsson NT made Croatia's first UMTS call on November 22nd via an Ericsson handset. The call was placed at 3G VISION conference in Zagreb, the biggest Croatian telecommunications event this year. Already with the introduction of VIP.gprs in spring this year, VIP-Net placed Croatia among the first European countries to introduce the 2.5 generation of mobile telephony. VIP-Net and Ericsson's UMTS call is the first major step towards 3G in Croatia. Boris Nemsic, CEO of Mobilkom Austria, said, "VIP-Net is optimistic about the tender for the UMTS license. The license will further emphasize VIP-Net's leading role in the Croatian communications market. As early as next year, Mobilkom Austria will launch its UMTS network and create a platform for the accelerated development of UMTS in Croatia." Chairman of VIP-Net's Management Board, Tatjana Holjevac, Master of Science MSc, further stated, "UMTS was a vision and today it is becoming a reality. UMTS will change society. Through high-speed data transmission, customers will have access to desired information at any time and anyplace." Services that can be used instantly with UMTS will be prepared for the customers in a new multimedia form. VIP-Net, the leading communications service provider and technology innovator in Croatia, is already introducing GSM and GPRS applications such as mobile commerce and location-based services. For the first time in Croatia VIP-Net has made possible, the ability via mobile phone to buy entrance tickets for the cinema and theatre, to buy flowers and to pay for parking. Croatia is a key market for UMTS. Ericsson's objective in Croatia, after the grant of licenses in 2002, is to become the main provider for UMTS network operators.
