Korea to have new IMT-2000 numbering system

Korea's Ministry of Information and Communication is to introduce so-called mobile phone number mobility for the forthcoming 3G phone IMT-2000 services that will enable customers to use other company's phone networks.

Under the proposed plan, mobile phone users can easily switch their operators, without changing signal code _ such as 011, 016, 018 or 019 _ in line with each company's pricing and quality.

Han Choon-koo, the director-general at the ministry's telecom support bureau, said he will finalize how they plan to introduce the service by the end of this year

When 3G services are commercialized between late 2002 and early 2003, the mobile phone number mobility system will also take effect, he said.

He added that mobile phone users would benefit from this as people will then have the power to freely choose their mobile operator.

However, the plan is seen as a severe blow to mobile phone operators, because customers have been reluctant to change their service operators to sustain their signal codes.
