First 3G base station installed in Cambridgedate: November 27, 2001 - source: Cambridge 3G Vodafone UK, part of the world's largest mobile community, has completed the installation of its first third generation (3G) base station in Cambridge - the first step in creating an environment specifically for application developers to use to trial new services. Further base stations will be deployed over the next few months to complete a test network environment, with this first site providing mobile coverage at the Cambridge Science Park. Installation of the initial base station is a major milestone in the programme that will provide the first 'live' environment specifically for application developers to use to trial new bandwidth hungry 3G services. The test network will cover Central Cambridge and surrounding roads enabling application developers to test pedestrian and vehicle based services.
