SMARTCOM PCS and Nortel Networks Complete Wireless Milestone in Latin Americadate: November 28, 2001 SMARTCOM PCS and Nortel Networks accomplished a significant milestone in the evolution to 3G wireless technology, completing Latin America’s first call using commercial CDMA2000 1X equipment. The call carried both voice and data over the same channel, another regional first. Nortel Networks commercial CDMA2000 1X solution is designed to significantly increase network voice capacity, and to support data transmission speeds up to 153.6 kilobits per second – more than 10 times the speed commonly available today. This helps position service providers like SMARTCOM PCS to offer 'always on' Wireless Internet services such as streaming video, mobile commerce, navigation and location-based services, messaging, personal information management, and wireless Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). "We are advancing on our plan to expand the coverage of our network and, at the same time, increase the scope and the quality of the services we offer," said Jaime Gros, general manager, SMARTCOM PCS. "Nortel Networks global leadership and proven track record in deploying wireless networks has helped us achieve yet another important milestone on the road to 3G." "With CDMA2000 1X, SMARTCOM PCS will be able to offer its customers cutting-edge wireless technology," said Alvio Barrios, sales director for Nortel Networks in Latin America. "We will continue to support SMARTCOM PCS in its quest to become a leading regional provider of third generation wireless services," Barrios said.
