Optimus Completes Live UMTS 3GPP Call in Portugal Based on Nortel Networks Solutiondate: November 28, 2001 Optimus, a subsidiary of SonaeCom and France Telecom, and Nortel Networks have completed live voice calls using the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) wireless standard. The live calls were made with a form factor terminal in Porto, Northern Portugal using commercial 3GPP compliant UMTS equipment from Nortel Networks, including the core network, Internet Base Transceiver Stations and Internet Radio Network Controller. "We aim to rapidly bring UMTS services to the Portuguese market," said Antonio Casanova, chief executive officer, Optimus. "This first UMTS call in real network conditions based on Nortel Networks solutions is a significant milestone on this roadmap." "This new success joins a number of UMTS milestones and further strengthens our leadership position and time-to-market advantage for 3G," said Pascal Debon, president, Wireless Networks, Nortel Networks.
