China to start W-CDMA trial in early 2002

date: November 30, 2001

China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) plans to conduct trials of W-CDMA networks as early as January 2002.

The MII has selected a group of international and domestic companies to supply equipment and expertise for the 3G trial, to be conducted by the MII’s Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission and 3G Technical Trial Expert Group at a newly set up environment called MTNet.

The trial will consists of 3GPP Release 99-compliant equipment, including Node-B, radio network controllers, mobile switching center, and other major network components within a 3G environment.

The first phase of the 3G trial will begin in January and last through the end of March 2002. This phase will consist of a single system test, which will focus on the functions, interfaces and other features of each vendor's platform.

Qualified participants will move on to the second phase, which will be made up of actual field trials of the equipment in multiple cities. The second phase of the trial will test the network’s ability to work with terminals and its interoperability with equipment from other vendors.

The second phase is expected to take a year and lead to China’s selection of its 3G technology and suppliers.
