Wind plans to launch 3G in mid-2003
November 11, 2002
Wind SpA expects to launch pre-commercial 3G services in four major
Italian cities by year-end, said Chief Executive Tommaso Pompei.
The Italian operator will expand their 3G services to other cities
early next year and hopefully launch full commercial services in
mid-2003. They expect to achieve mass market penetration by 2005.
Wind SpA is the third largest mobile operator in Italy and has
around 7.7 million users to its mobile services. The company is
owned by Enel and France Telecom.
Telecom Italia and Hutchison 3G are competing to be the first in
Italy to launch 3G services. Third generation handsets in Italy
are expected to cost between €600 to €900 without any subsidising.
