Telesp Celular to expand CDMA2000 in Brazil
November 12, 2002
Telesp Celular today announced plans to expand its CDMA2000 1X
network to the ABC Paulista and Chacara Flora regions using equipment
supplied by Lucent Technologies. The deployment of this third-generation
(3G) network will provide corporate customers in these regions with
access to innovative mobile services, enabling them to access their
company's intranets and the Internet from any location.
Using CDMA2000 1X technology, Telesp Celular can double voice capacity
and provide data services at speeds of up to 153kbps, nearly 10
times faster than what is currently available in these regions.
Lucent will upgrade Telesp Celular's existing Lucent-supplied base
stations in the ABC and Chacara Flora regions with CDMA2000 1X channel
cards and software, and also provide software enhancements for Telesp
Celular's mobile switching centers to enable these advanced services.
Subscribers are able to access the high-speed CDMA2000 1X network
using CDMA2000 1X cell phones or laptop PCs and PDAs equipped with
CDMA2000 1X PC cards.
CDMA2000 cost-effectively evolves a multitude of network technologies
to support 3G services.
According to the CDMA Development Group (CDG), the number of 3G
CDMA2000 users has already surpassed 19 million worldwide, and nearly
two million new subscribers are registered every month. Today, 23
mobile operators in the Americas, Asia and Europe are offering commercial
CDMA2000 1X services. Additionally, 31 of the largest manufacturers
already sell more than 200 models of CDMA2000 terminals, at competitive
prices.
