Qualcomm in talks with Far Eastern operators over CDMA2000
November 13, 2002
Qualcomm is in talks to bring its next-generation systems to Hong
Kong and Taiwan, the firm's top China executive said on Wednesday.
Rich Sulpizio said that Qualcomm is in discussion with two operators,
one in Taiwan and the other in Hong Kong, over adopting the CDMA2000
technology for 3G systems.
While Europe has backed CDMA2000's rival standard, WCDMA, there
is no dominant standard in Asia. Some Asian countries have implemented
both standards, such as Japan, and others will most probably follow
the same route.
"We're in between preliminary and advanced talks with one Taiwan
carrier," said Sulpizio.
"We're having some serious discussions with one in Hong Kong...
I don't expect anything real soon. That's part of the whole business
development cycle, it takes time."
Hong Kong operator CSL is considered to be the most likely to adopt
CDMA2000 as its parent, Australia's Telstra Corp, said last month
it is seriously considering CDMA2000 for its 3G network.
Analysts believe most carriers in Asia will adopt WCDMA since many
in those markets now use GSM.
