Nokia to outsource mobile phone production in Taiwan
November 14, 2002
Mobile phone maker Nokia will likely outsource handset production
to Taiwan after it won a NT$12 billion contract to provide 3G mobile
phone equipment to Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom, a Taiwanese newspaper
reported. The state run operator turned down lower tender bids from
other bidders.
The Finnish phone maker also plans to establish a NT$250 million
software application research center in Taiwan by the end of 2002
or early in 2003, according to the report.
The paper named Taiwanese mobile phone makers Hon Hai Precision
Industry and Unimicron Technology as possible beneficiaries of any
outsourcing by Nokia of 3G phones.
