Ericsson expects to win 3G contracts in Malaysia
November 14, 2002
Ericsson said today that it expects to win 40% of Malaysia's 3G
market, valued at around $789 million. The Swedish cellular equipment
maker has stepped up its effort in Asia to take advantage of the
high market growth.
Ericsson will participate in tenders from 3G license holders Telekom
Malaysia and Maxis Communications. Mats H.Olsson, Ericsson's Malaysia
manager, expects the competition to be fierce, but confident Ericsson
will win at least 40% of deals. Each company will issue several
contracts that could be split between vendors.
Maxis have said they will invite bids by the end of this year,
with Ericsson, Motorola Inc and Siemens AG seen as frontrunners.
Analysts believe Maxis and Telekom will invest $789 million over
the next two years on 3G networks. The two operators were awarded
3G licences in July.
Olsson said his firm also hoped for work from DiGi.Com, largely
owned by Norway's Telenor. While DiGi did not bid for a 3G license
it plans to offer 3G-style services using a high-speed Edge technology,
Olsson said.
