China Telecom decides on PHS, GSM or 3G
November 15, 2002
China Telecom is deciding whether to implement PHS (personal handphone
systems) wireless mobile technology. There are three choices for
China Telecom after it gains mobile license: GSM, 3G, and PHS. China
Telecom faces stiff competition from China Mobile and China Unicom
if it chooses GSM and needs three to five years to catch-up with
them.
On the other hand, the general manager of System Department of
PHS of ZTE, believes that 3G technology is far from mature, may
be put to small-scale commercial testing at least in the second
half next year. Second, 3G commercial testing in Japan and Europe
has failed. Lastly, there is no 3G terminal for 3G technology. It
is not practical for China Telecom to choose 3G.
Therefore, the best choice for China Telecom is PHS.
An employee from inside Shanghai China Telecom recognized that
they had been planning to adopt PHS. They will start with corporate
users, providing PHS for using inside the company.
