France Telecom to bailout MobilCom
November 15, 2002
Former chief executive of MobilCom Gerhard Schmid on Thursday decided
to put his shares of the company in a trust managed by Helmut Thoma,
former head of television business, RTL.
France Telecom refused to bail out the company until Mr Schmid
agreed to place his and his wife's shares with a trustee.
It means MobilCom's 3G business will be shut, with the cost, around
€300m, taken on by France Telecom. The agreement would also mean
any proceeds received from selling of 3G assets, including the license,
will go to France Telecom. The French company will assume and forgive
a total of €7bn of MobilCom's debt that includes bank and vendor
debt, as well as loans from the French company.
MobilCom said it would announce a restructuring programme in the
coming days.
