Croatia To Award 3G Licences in 2003

The Croatian government has stated that it will auction two 3G
licences in March 2003. According to reports in the Croatian press
the country’s telecoms minister Roland Zuvanic has outlined a timetable
for the award of the UMTS concessions as well as a third GSM licence
during 2003.
Croatia is currently home to two digital mobile networks one of
which is operated by Croatia Telecom (Cronet) and the other by VIPnet,
a subsidiary of Austria’s Mobilkom. Croatia Telecom is 51% owned
by Deutsche Telekom with the remainder being held by the Croatian
government. By mid-2002 Cronet had 1.1 million subscribers and at
the same date VIPnet reported 956,000 customers.
