Ericsson believes high demand for 3G in Taiwan
November 19, 2002
Kurt Hellstrom, president and CEO of Swedish based Ericsson, said
that Taiwanese acceptance of 3G services is expected to be high,
given the public's strong interest in cutting-edge technologies.
"I believe Taiwan will be an early adopter of 3G services," he
said. The outlook for Taiwan should be positive, with licensing
fees priced affordably and companies cautiously planning the launch
of services, he said.
The comments were made at Globecom 2002 held in the Taipei World
Trade Center. Academics and professionals from the telecom industry
attended the bi-annual event, which started yesterday and ends Thursday.
Jan Signell, the president of Ericsson Taiwan said that Japanese
and Taiwanese have similar consumer behaviour, therefore some of
the technology trends going on in Japan could also apply to Taiwan.
Referring to the success of photo messaging in Japan, he said, "I
am sure it will work very well here in Taiwan too."
Hellstrom believes the global mobile communication market is unlikely
to recover anytime soon, saying, "We estimate next year's market
size will be about the same as this year."
