Portuguese Operators Partner To Buy Out 3G Rival
November 19, 2002 - source: BWCS
Three Portuguese mobile network operators are reported to have
launched a bid to acquire the assets of the new entrant 3G licensee
OniWay. According to the AFX newswire the chairman of Vodafone’s
Portuguese subsidiary Telecel has confirmed that it plans to table
a combined bid for OniWay along with rivals TMN and Optimus.
Last week one of OniWay’s major shareholder, the power utility
Electricidade de Portugal, denied that it had been approached in
regard to selling its mobile business. OniWay had been expected
to be the first operator to launch UMTS services in Portugal and
last month the company announced that it had successfully completed
3G network trials in Lisbon. The operator was shortly due to introduce
GPRS services, through a roaming agreement with TMN, in order to
pave the way for its 3G services.
However it now seems that the country’s three incumbent operators
are set to snap up OniWay’s assets. Crucially if the deal goes ahead
it will effectively increase potential 3G revenues for the remaining
operators by reducing competition. For the moment it remains unclear
how OniWay’s existing network equipment would be shared between
the trio and when or whether its UMTS concession would be re-awarded.
