SK Telecom to launch WCDMA 3G service in late 2003
November 21, 2002
South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom said it will launch 3G
service based on WCDMA technology in the fourth quarter of next
year.
The operator said early this year that it might delay its 3G mobile
service until 2004 because of a lack of interest in next generation
services. They also fear the limited bandwidth for current services
could damage growth for data services.
"We see a shortage of frequency (spectrum for data services) in
2004," said SK's vice president Cho Sung-hae.
SK is one of two operators to be awarded with a WCDMA license in
South Korea. Despite rolling out cdma2000 service, the operator
said it would not launch cdma2000 1x EV-DV service, which the other
operators in South Korean are deploying. "We don't see much difference
between EV-DV and W-CDMA in terms data transmission speeds and content
to offer," said Chang Hyuk-joon, an official at SK.
SK is reviewing 3G network equipment bids from local and foreign
equipment and would announce successful bidders early next year.
Japan cellular operator NTT DoCoMo, which launched 3G service based
on WCDMA technology, has been plagued with network and coverage
problems since its launch in October 2001. It subscription rate
is much lower than rival KDDI, which deployed cdma2000 technology.
