Samsung said they will launch a 3G WCDMA dual mode handset in the European market in the third quarter of 2003. "The WCDMA phone we're going to introduce by the third quarter of next year, with the Qualcomm chip," said Park Sang-Jin, Senior Vice President of Samsung's telecommunications division, and added that it will be able to handle almost all available 2G and 3G wireless networks. He warned that the high cost of the chip and the slow rollout of WCDMA in Europe and elsewhere would not make it a big seller. The company will in the future launch a series of smartphones based on software Palm and Microsoft, and Symbian. "Most demand will come from the North American market," Park said, noting it would benefit from recent upgrade of the CDMA2000 1x networks in the American markets. "European carriers have been penalized by the license auctions," he said, and added that U.S. and Asian markets were overtaking Europe in wireless services.
