Three faces protest over 3G mast near school
November 22, 2002
Three of UK, formerly H3G, faces protest from children and parents
over plans to build a mobile phone mast near their homes and schools.
The operator wanted to build a 25 meter antenna just yards from
Thorpe Hamlet First School in Norfolk, UK.
Norwich City Council's planning applications committee blocked
the proposal last August, but Three challenged the decision and
made an appeal to deputy prime minister John Prescott to overturn
it. The council refused permission, saying that it would affect
the "character and visual amenities" of the area.
Parents, children and residents will link arms and form a human
chain surrounding the proposed site to show visually the impact
this could have, and how many people it would affect.
Residents have voiced their concern over the health issue surrounding
radio masts and parents are worried about the affects it will have
on their children.
Three argued that if people want mobile phone services in the area,
they need to build a site there as was no other alternative site
in the area.
