France Telecom to bailout MobilCom
November 25, 2002
France Telecom agreed to a €7.6 billion bailout of MobilCom, paying
the price of a disastrous and short-lived adventure in Germany's
crowded wireless market.
In a statement, France Telecom will take over MobilCom's roughly
€6 billion of bank loans and swap them for bonds convertible into
France Telecom shares. It will also waive about €1 billion in other
loans.
Under the agreement, France Telecom will participate in a plan
to shut down the German UMTS business, costing up to €580 million.
MobilCom will continue operating in the German market in a slimmed-down
form. The only prospect of a return from the deal is that France
Telecom will get 90% of any proceeds on UMTS asset sold by MobilCom.
A number of banks will provide €112 million in fresh financing
to MobilCom, which plans to refocus on its wireless services business.
The agreement now rests on reaching a deal with MobilCom's bankers
and its suppliers by November 30 and backing by shareholders of
both France Telecom and MobilCom.
MobilCom and its founder Gerhard Schmid have agreed not to pursue
legal claims against France Telecom.
