SK Telecom Offers 3G Video Service
November 25, 2002 - source: BWCS
The South Korean cellular operator SK Telecom has launched a new
3G mobile video service over its high-speed cdma2000 1X EV-DO (data
only) network. The operator says the service allows subscribers
to receive unlimited live television reports, streaming video and
music on demand for a flat fee of KRW25,000 (US$20.60) per month.
SK Telecom’s 1X EV-DO networks offer data transmission speeds of
up to 256kbps and have attracted around 15,000 customers since their
launch earlier this year.
SK Telecom says that it has spent KRW400 billion (US$330 million)
so far on rolling out its cdma2000 1X EV-DO networks and has earmarked
a further KRW30 billion (US$25 million) for the development of new
content for its high-speed service which has been labelled ‘June’.
All three of Korea’s mobile operators – SK Telecom, KT Freetel
and LG Telecom – have rolled out networks based on cdma2000 1X technology.
South Korea is currently home to around 31 million mobile subscribers,
with around one third of these using 1X networks. SK Telecom is
the dominant player in the Korean market, claiming more than 50%
of all mobile customers and the lion’s share of the cdma2000 1X
sector. As reported by BWCS on Friday, SK Telecom is planning to
launch a wideband CDMA 3G network before the end of 2003.
