MobilCom will not give back its 3G license
November 26, 2002
MobilCom, recently rescued by a €7.6 billion bailout from France
Telecom, said there's no need now to return its 3G license to the
German telecom regulator. The company will halt development of 3G
as it restructures its wireless services provider business.
Under the obligations of the 3G license, the operator must cover
25% of the population by end-2003. A spokesman decline to say what
would happen if the condition was not met. "It's an open question,
there's no new development"
The German telecom authority won't allow the sale or trade of 3G
licenses between the six operators that bought the 3G licenses.
"No company can have two licenses," a spokesman for the regulator
said, but did not rule out the sale to a firm without a license.
MobilCom's 3G network already covers 17% of the population and
its base stations are of value to other competitors. E-Plus would
be a possible buyer, said MobilCom supervisory board member Dieter
Vogel in an interview with Focus Online.
