MobilCom writes off billions in 3G investments
November 28, 2002
German telecom firm MobilCom has written off billions of euros
of investment in 3G mobile networks. A total of €9.9 billion was
wrote down, but the firm said some €7.1 billion would be taken on
by France Telecom, which has a 28.5% share in the German operator.
So the net write-down for MobilCom would be €2.8bn, the company
said.
The write down came as the operator reported a net loss of €2.86
billion in the third quarter.
Mobilcom was on the verge of insolvency when France Telecom stopped
funding the company in September.
France Telecom agreed last week to assume and forgive MobilCom's
debt, settling a bitter feud over funding. The company will cover
€4.8 billion in MobilCom's bank loans, €1.2 billion in vendor financing
and €1 billion of shareholder loans.
Under the deal, France Telecom will also pay up to €580 million
to cover MobilCom's costs for winding down its 3G investment plans.
In turn, the French will receive 90% of all proceeds MobilCom might
receive in selling its 3G assets.
Even so, MobilCom has no plans to sell it 3G license, costing €8.4
billion.
