500 Superdrug stores to sell Hutchison 3G mobiles

November 12, 2003

In its latest attempt to aggressively push high-speed 3G mobile services, 3UK will increase its presence in Superdrug stores across the UK. Hutchison Whampoa, part owner of 3UK, announced that Superdrug will allow 3UK to occupy between 300 to 500 Superdrug stores.

The arrangements would allow 3UK to establish "a retail presence in main shopping areas throughout the UK" and will give "an advantage in its drive to generate sales and to attract new subscribers for its third generation mobile service and related products."

In July, Hutchison established 3UK stores inside 60 Superdrug stores to promote and sell its 3G services. The store-within-store concept is 3UK's main distribution method and a cheaper alternative to having its own 3G store. Superdrug, a subsidiary of Hutchison, is a pharmaceutical chain and it is hoped that customers would be lured to test out the latest mobile service from 3UK.
