Qualcomm's MSM6250 Chipset Selected by Toshiba for the WCDMA/GSM/GPRS Market

November 13, 2003 - source: BWCS

The Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei has revealed that it expects to have wideband CDMA handsets in production by the middle of next year. According to a Reuters report, Huawei has already begun producing CDMA2000 1X handsets for the Asian market, where operators in Japan, Korea and China are offering services based on the Qualcomm-developed standard.

Huawei is a relative latecomer to the mobile handset market, traditionally focussing on fixed and mobile network equipment, but it is hoping to capitalise on the boom in demand for handsets in its domestic market and the rest of Asia. Huawei spokesperson Fu Jun says that the company has still to work out production targets for its 3G handsets: “We should be ready [for W-CDMA handset production] by the middle of next year. But we don’t have a specific plan for production yet.”
