A920 patch forced to be taken down
November 14, 2003
A web site containing a software patch for the Motorola A920 that can
unlock the phones connectivity features was forced to remove the software
after Motorola issued a legal notice.
Marius Vincent of the 3G Forum was given the patch, firmware upgrade,
by a Motorola employee that would enable Bluebooth and infrared communication
in the A920 and remove restrictions against installing third party software.
The A920 handset is available from Hutchison 3 but the operator has locked
the Bluebooth and infrared support so no unauthorised software could be
installed.
The patch would also allow users to make calls over mmO2's network in
the UK instead of over 3's WCDMA network. Although 3 has a roaming agreement
with O2 that lets its users make calls on O2's network when there is no
3G coverage, the 3G operator is not keen on users using O2's network unnecessarily.
Customers are buying the A920 thinking they are Bluetooth and infrared
enabled without realising the functions has been locked.
Vincent has no hard feelings for Motorola but he has started a petition
online, requesting Hutchison to unlock the A920.
